Building a Financial Partnership

Communication is the key to a having a successful financial partnership. Keep money discussions open and nonjudgmental. When disagreements arise, avoid the blame game. Also strive to understand your partner’s point of view. How can you best do this?

  1. Agree with everything you’re told.
  2. Listen carefully.
  3. Avoid dealing with uncomfortable topics.

“B” is the answer. Try to empathize and validate positive aspects of your partner’s financial personality and habits. If one of you is responsible for paying the family bills, schedule a regular “budget night” at least once a month where the other person gets updated on your joint financial status. If you’re a stay-at-home mom with no earned income and your husband is the major breadwinner, remember: You each still have a role in the operation of the household and bring value to the partnership.
