money talks

Why Couples Don’t Talk About Money

Before couples live together or marry, they often discuss their views on family, children, vacations, wedding plans, and even decorating. But studies show they’re less likely to talk about personal finance. Why is this?

  1. Because they don’t consider money important
  2. Because money is such a private topic
  3. Because they already know their partners’ beliefs about money

“B” is correct. Over time each of us has developed his or her own unique view of what money represents. For some it signifies success -- for others, it symbolizes power, control, love or even happiness. Sometimes our reluctance to discuss money issues is based on our own lack of experience. If our parents never talked openly about family finances or fought over how money was being spent, we may even find this a fearful topic to discuss.
