Understanding Your Credit Card Statement

The CARD Act of 2010 has made it easier to review and understand your credit card statement. Which of these items should you check each month?

  1. Was your payment applied to last month's balance?

  2. Does the new balance accurately reflect your purchases and any balance transfers, cash advances, past due amounts, fees, and interest?

  3. Do you recognize all the charges listed as transactions?

These items should ALL be part of your statement review. If you don't recognize a charge, research it further. If it appears unauthorized, file a dispute with your credit card provider. To see a sample billing statement, click here.
