Campus vs. Off-Campus Housing

Students often think living off campus will give them increased freedom. They also assume it’s less expensive to live off campus than in a dorm. Is this true?

  1. Yes, campus food and lodging always cost more than you’d pay outside.
  2. No, off-campus housing is always higher.
  3. It depends on the individual school and setting.

“C” is correct. Campus housing comes at a price, because the school has to pay for heating, upkeep, security, and cover the same accommodations students had living at home. Although off-campus rent may be less, it may cost just as much or more to live there once other expenses (security deposit, utilities, cable, Internet, and furnishings) are included. Weigh all of these factors carefully before deciding where to live. And don’t forget the cheapest alternative: Living at home.
