How to Combat Health Care Fraud

How can each of us help reduce health care fraud?

  1. By keeping written records of the treatments we receive
  2. By promptly signing any medical forms that are provided to us
  3. By using cash to pay health care providers for tests and procedures

“A” is correct. Also carefully review the billing and summary statements you receive. Before tests or treatment, ask your medical provider how much they charge and what you’ll be expected to pay out of pocket. Never sign blank insurance claim forms. Watch out for sales reps who come to your home or call and offer free medical services or equipment or who ask for your policy number or insurance ID number in exchange for free gifts, treatment or equipment. If you spot a scam, contact your insurer and state fraud bureau immediately. For Medicare and Medicaid, call the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Fraud Hotline at 1-800-447-8477.
