Health Care Scam Tactics

Health care insurance scams and fraud in government programs like Medicare and Medicaid cost American taxpayers billions of dollars each year. Hospital systems and medical centers and their staff members or patients may be involved as either victims or perpetrators. Which of these is a common health care scheme?

1. Dishonest medical providers bill insurers for expensive tests, equipment, or treatments that patients never received.
2. They perform and bill for unnecessary treatments or surgeries.
3. They double or triple-bill insurers for the same treatment.

ALL of these scams are widespread. Posing as lawful insurance agents or brokers, con artists also sell unsuspecting victims bogus policies with high premiums. Victims may only become aware they’ve been had when they try to file a claim. Scammers also steal medical ID numbers and use them to bill for nonexistent treatments or services.
