Funeral Plans and Scams

A typical funeral now costs around $8,000. Funeral costs may include everything from staffing, facilities, vaults or plots, embalming, cremation, and transport of the deceased and family to note cards, tribute videos, and online memorials. How can you save your family the pressure and expense of a funeral scam?

  1. Invest in prepaid funeral arrangements.
  2. Save for the funeral and preplan by expressing your wishes.
  3. Choose burial over cremation -- it’s less expensive.

“B” is correct. Prepayment may not benefit you or your family as much as the funeral home. What if it goes out of business before you die? Carefully review possible costs and consider if extras and upgrades are really necessary. For example, a public viewing costs extra and may not fulfill any real purpose, depending on you and your family’s needs.
