Home Improvement Nightmares

Home improvement scams are another housing-related swindle. This type of fraud often starts when a “contractor” knocks on your door with an offer to repair something (i.e. your roof or foundation) for a substantial discount. Which of these signs may be a tip-off you’re actually dealing with a scam artist?

  1. The contractor provides several references you can contact about his past work.
  2. The contractor will allow you to pay for the job once it’s complete.
  3. The contractor says he’s working down the road and just noticed your home is in need of repair.

“C” is correct. Avoid contractors who pull into your driveway in unmarked trucks or ones with out-of-state license plates. Also steer clear of those who ask to be paid in full before starting work or offer to obtain financing for you. Don’t be tempted or pressured into taking a “one-time offer.” Check references and request competitive bids instead.
