Choosing a Financial Planner

A reputable financial planner can help you prepare a plan for retirement. Interview several to find one that’s right for you. During the interview what should you ask?

  1. How long have you been in business and what qualifications do you have?
  2. What services do you offer?
  3. What is your approach to financial planning?

These are ALL wise questions. Look for an expert with proven experience in tax planning, insurance, investments, estate planning, and retirement planning. Ask if he/she is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Certified Public Accountant-Personal Financial Specialist (CPA-PFS), or Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC). What does the planner normally charge and how will you pay for services? Ask the planner to provide a written agreement and FORM ADV Part II disclosure form.
