how scams work

Scams that Target Immigrants

Immigrants who lack knowledge about U.S. laws are frequently targeted by scam artists who offer to help them fill out immigration papers or file petitions with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. In this situation, how do things end up?

  1. The victim’s application or petition is often expedited.
  2. The victim may pay large, unnecessary fees.
  3. The victim usually receives a green card or becomes a citizen.

“B” is correct. The victim’s application also may be delayed and proceedings may begin to remove them from the country. To avoid trouble: Seek legal advice from a lawyer instead of a notario, notario public, or notary public. Never pay for blank government forms; free immigration forms are available here. When researching information, only use legitimate government websites with internet addresses that end in dot gov (.gov).
