how scams work

Email Pitfalls to Avoid

Scammers and hackers also reach out to us through email. One common email ploy is called “phishing.” Phishing is when you receive an email where:

  1. You’re asked to send money to help someone who is in trouble.
  2. You’re notified you won a lottery or a sweepstakes.
  3. A scammer poses as a legitimate bank, service provider, e-pay system, or organization.

“C” is correct. Phishers send emails that ask you to click a link and provide confidential information, such as your social security, bank account, or credit card number, or your password. Legitimate businesses don’t use emails to request account updates. To protect yourself, also avoid opening emails from unfamiliar sources. Think twice if they request money or ask you to cash a check, open an account, or claim a prize.
