Other Ways to Reduce College Costs

Federal (FWS) or non-federal work study (NWS) programs provide part-time employment to college students. FWS is awarded to those who demonstrate financial need. NWS doesn’t depend on need and is offered through your college. Which of these other strategies also help pay for or reduce educational costs?

  1. 529 college savings plans to which your parents may have contributed
  2. Attending community college or a state school in which you live
  3. The college-level exam program (CLEP)

These ALL can help you leave college owing less. Community colleges cost less than most four-year universities. In-state tuition costs less than going out-of-state or to a private school. The CLEP allows you to take a computerized test to show how much you know about a specific subject and receive college credit if you pass.
