When It Doesn’t Pay to Give

Genuine nonprofits with good intentions may contact you and ask for a donation. But there are also scam artists out there masquerading as charitable institutions. How can you tell if a charity is legitimate?

  1. Ask to receive and review written information before you give.
  2. Watch out for sound-alikes.
  3. Beware of requests to support police or firefighters.

ALL of these make sense. Reputable charities will happily send you materials to review before you make a decision. Scam artists often use names similar to those of well known and respected organizations. Most states require charities to register with them and file annual reports showing how they use donations. The Better Business Bureau Wise Alliance also provides information on national charities.
