How to Tell If an Attorney Is for Real

Sadly, some groups that advertise mortgage assistance relief services claim they can obtain help for you from a licensed attorney, but do not. Before you hire a lawyer or someone who says they work with one, what should you do?

  1. Ask if you can receive free legal services.
  2. Demand to see each attorney’s graduation diploma from law school.
  3. Get the name of each attorney who will be helping you and find out if he/she is licensed to practice in your state.

“C” is the best answer. Check if the attorney is in good standing with your state bar association. The National Organization of Bar Counsel has links to your state bar. Also ask friends and relatives you trust for legal referrals.
