Negotiating the Best Deal

When you grocery shop, the price that's listed for food is usually what you pay. This isn't true when buying a car. In this case, negotiation is part of the process. Which of these tactics will help you obtain the best possible price?

  1. Visit the dealership at the right time.
  2. Only look at a few cars before deciding which to buy.
  3. Be open and enthusiastic when dealing with sales staff.

"A" is correct. If possible, shop at the end of the month when sales people hope to reach quotas. From July through October, dealers also need to sell cars so they have space for next year's models. Before you walk on the lot, make sure you've done your research -- know how much cars usually cost. Visit as many dealerships as possible and compare what they offer. Avoid appearing too eager.
