Identity Theft

What Is Identity Theft?

Which of These Statements Is True?

  1. Identity theft can only happen if you're at work or shopping.
  2. Identity thieves always use sophisticated means to steal information.
  3. Identity theft is always carried out by strangers.

None of these statements is true. Anyone who has access to your personal information can steal it. This may even be someone you know. The thief may:

  • Remove information from your home.
  • Steal a wallet or purse that contains Social Security, credit, or bank cards.
  • Take mail that includes bank or credit card statements, new checks, or tax information.
  • Fill out a "change of address" form to divert your mail to another location.
  • Rummage through your trash or "dumpster dive" at a public trash site.

Scam information from you by posing as a legitimate business or government representative.
