Identity Theft

What Is Identity Theft?

Identity theft is when someone uses personal information, such as your name, Social Security number, or credit card number without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes.

For example: An identity thief may steal your information and obtain a credit card, open a cell phone account, or rent an apartment in your name.

Identity theft is a serious problem, because it can cost hundreds of dollars and require many hours of work to correct. In the meantime:

  • Your credit may be destroyed.
  • You may lose out on job opportunities.
  • You may be denied a loan.

In rare cases, you may even be arrested.
