You are a candidate for identity theft unless your personal records are kept in a secure place, especially if you employ outside help, have work done on your home, or live with roommates. Family members may even be at fault.

In a 2008 Javelin report, family, relatives, friends, neighbors, and live-in employees accounted for 50% of all identity theft cases reported. 43% of the identity theft victims polled for an ITRC Aftermath Study knew their perpetrator.

  • Keep your bank records and other documents with sensitive personal information in a locked room or box.
  • Don't leave your purse, wallet, checkbook, bills, or financial records in plain view. As soon as you use them, return them to where they belong.
  • Only share your personal information with family members or friends who have a legitimate need to know.
