How To Protect Yourself

Do You Carry Your Social Security Number in Your Purse or Wallet?

If so, you could easily become an identity theft victim. Your Social Security number offers a "gateway" to your identity. Identity thieves may use it to open accounts, procure services, or even sell it to someone else.

  • When you go out, restrict the pieces of personal identification you carry. Check to see which ones include your Social Security number, and whenever possible, leave these at home.
  • Also consider limiting the number of debit or credit cards you carry.
  • When you pay for items with your debit or credit card at stores or gas stations, take measures to keep your identity safe. Shield your card with your hand so that other customers cannot see it. Keep an eye on clerks during transactions. Also avoid providing personal information, like your name, address, or account number, verbally. Write it down instead.
