How to Manage Identity Theft

If you suspect identity theft, what else should you do right away?

Step 2: Immediately close any accounts that you believe have been compromised or fraudulently opened.

  • Contact the Security or Fraud Department of each company.
  • Follow up in writing and include copies (NOT originals) of supporting documents. Be sure to provide written notice to your bank and credit card companies. Send these notification letters by certified mail, return receipt requested, so that you have proof the companies received them and when. File copies of your correspondence and enclosures for future reference.
  • When you open new accounts, use new Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and passwords. Help deter future identity theft by choosing difficult passwords: Avoid using a series of consecutive numbers (1-2-3), familiar words, or easy-to-obtain information such as your birth date, phone number, or Social Security Number.
