How to Manage Identity Theft

How to Manage Identity Theft

How long does it take to restore your credit once you've been a victim of identity theft?

There is no easy answer to this question, because every situation is different. However, there are things you can do to facilitate the process.

  • Keep a record of the people you speak to by phone, including their names, phone numbers, date and time of calls, and what was said. Follow up phone calls in writing and keep copies of these letters.
  • If errors continue to appear on your credit report, contact both the credit reporting agency and the creditor.
  • When writing creditors, send your correspondence to the address for "billing inquiries."
  • If a creditor agrees to close your account and discharge any debts, ask for a letter confirming this decision. Keep a copy in your records.
