How to Avoid Warranty Issues

A warranty from the car manufacturer helps defray the cost of some car repairs and replacement parts. Make sure you know exactly what your warranty covers and follow the maintenance schedule it recommends. For a warranty to remain valid, does the maintenance all have to be done at a dealership?

  1. Yes, the warranty requires that all maintenance be done there.
  2. Anyone who is competent can service your car.
  3. It depends on the type of maintenance being done.

"C" is correct. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for dealers or manufacturers to void a warranty or deny coverage simply because someone else did the work. That said, it sometimes pays to have the dealership do a job. If you or an outside mechanic make a mistake, this will void warranty coverage.
